Crestor (rosuvastatin), Atorvastatin, Simvastatin and Pravastatin compared
The graph below shows the percentage change in LDL cholesterol by dose of Crestor (rosuvastatin), Atorvastatin, Simvastatin and Pravastatin at week 6, in clinical trials conducted in patients with type IIa/IIb dyslipidaemia.
(Type IIa dyslipidemia is the medical term for familial hypercholesterolaemia, Type IIb dyslipidemia is the medical term for combined hyperlipidaemia, ie the standard condition of high blood cholesterol levels. Type IIa and Type IIb dyslipidaemia are the most common causes of high cholesterol).

As can be seen, the 10mg dose of Crestor is as good as or nearly as good as reducing cholesterol as the top doses of both Simvastatin and Pravastatin. The 20mg dose of Crestor is more effective at reducing LDL cholesterol than all of the other statins.

*Crestor at 10mg reduced LDL cholesterol significantly more that atorvastatin 10mg, pravastatin 10mg, 20mg and 40mg. simvastatin 10mg, 20 mg and 40 mg (p<0.002)
†Crestor at 20 mg reduced LDL cholesterol significantly more than atorvastatin 20mg and 40mg, pravastatin 20 mg, 40mg and 80 mg (p<0.002)
‡Crestor at 40 mg reduced LDL cholesterol significantly more than atorvastatin, pravastatin and simvastatin
at all dose levels (p<0.002)
(For none statisticians - p<0.002 means that there is less than a 2 in 1000 chance of getting these results by chance - in other words, it is very unlikely that Crestor does not reduce cholesterol more than the other statins with which it has been compared.)
